Tim McGraw Shares The 'Beautiful' And 'Sad' Part About Being A Dad

Tim McGraw opened up about the bittersweetness of watching his three daughters grow up before his eyes.

McGraw, who shares three daughters with wife Faith Hillā€” Gracie, 23, Maggie, 22, and 19-year-old Audrey ā€” spoke with new dad Garrett Hedlund in a recent interview in which they reflected on fatherhood. In conversation with Hedlund, with whom he shares a father-son connection after acting as so in Friday Night Lights, McGraw spoke on why witnessing his daughtersā€™ growth has been ā€œbeautifulā€ and ā€œsad.ā€

ā€œThey were just babies. Our youngest is 19 and living in New York City now, I mean, itā€™s crazy. It goes by so fast,ā€ said the proud "girl dad." ā€œYou think youā€™re giving them good life lessons. You know, as a parentā€”look, [laughs] youā€™re going to get half of everything wrong. Thatā€™s just the nature of it. There is no handbook with it.ā€

The crooner added, ā€œTo look back now, over Faith [Hill] and Iā€™s 25 years of marriage coming up in October, and see where weā€™re at and see where our kids are, see how fast itā€™s gone by, itā€™s almostā€¦ itā€™s unfathomable how time flies. And the next thing you know, they grow so fast and itā€™s like every two years thereā€™s a different child that you have as they age.ā€

ā€œItā€™s a beautiful thing, but itā€™s a sad thing at the same time,ā€ McGraw admitted. ā€œYou find yourself reflecting and looking back at pictures and thinking, ā€˜Oh my gosh, I remember that time, I remember when they looked like that.ā€™ ā€¦ Itā€™s so sweet; thereā€™s some melancholy that goes along with it as they age.ā€

Speaking of fatherhood, McGraw also recently became a new godfather to Hedlund and Emma Roberts' baby boy, Rhodes.
