CA Power Grid Manager Has Issued A Flex Alert For Today - Aug 17th

There is a statewide Flex Alert happening today starting at 4pm that was issued by the manager of California's power grid to help cut back on some power usage in order to prevent a strain on the system.

In a statement, California ISO said:
"With above-normal temperatures in the forecast across much of the state tomorrow, the power grid operator is expecting an increase in electricity demand, primarily from air conditioning use, and is calling for voluntary conservation steps to help balance supply and demand."

Californians are being urged to cut back on power usage from 4pm-9pm on Wednesday, August 17th by setting their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoiding using major appliances and turning off unnecessary lights. Before the Flex Alert takes place, they are urging people to:

  • pre-cool homes by lowering the thermostat to 72 degrees
  • if you need to use major appliances, do that earlier on in the day
  • close windows to keep home cool
  • use solar energy to charge devices
  • charge your electric car earlier in the day
  • run pool pumps early in the morning
  • turn off unnecessary lights
